Macular degeneration (AMD): early detection can save your vision

Meta description (SEO): AMD is the leading cause of central vision loss in people aged 60 and over. Detect it early with OCT and fundus photography at INOF (Teknon Medical Centre, Barcelona). Book your retinal check-up.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of central vision loss in people over the age of 60. It affects the macula, the area of the retina responsible for sharp vision: reading, recognising faces or driving.

At first, it may not cause any symptoms or may present subtly: straight lines appear wavy or crooked, a blurry or grey spot appears in the centre of your vision, or you find it difficult to read even though your peripheral vision remains good. If you notice any of these signs, you should have an examination without delay.

There are two forms. The dry form is the most common and progresses slowly; the wet form can progress more rapidly, but we now have effective treatments when diagnosed early. At INOF, we examine your retina using state-of-the-art OCT and fundus photography for an accurate diagnosis and personalised follow-up.

Age, smoking and family history increase the risk. The good news is that, with AMD, early detection makes all the difference to the prognosis.

🔎 Quick self-test (Amsler grid): cover one eye and focus on the centre of the grid. If the lines appear wavy or distorted, or if you notice any blurred areas, book an appointment as soon as possible.
