The eye is one of the few parts of the body where blood vessels can be seen in real time, simply by taking a photograph of the back of the eye. This window into the body is precisely where artificial intelligence is demonstrating enormous potential.<\/p>\n

Deep learning algorithms \u2014 systems that learn to recognise patterns from thousands of images \u2014 are already capable of analysing retinal photographs and detecting very early signs of disease: the microaneurysms, haemorrhages and exudates characteristic of diabetic retinopathy, changes associated with age-related macular degeneration, or signs of glaucoma. They do so quickly and with an accuracy that, in some studies, exceeds 80%.<\/p>\n

Why does this matter to the patient? For two reasons. Firstly, because it allows for the early detection of diseases which, if caught late, can lead to vision loss. And secondly, because it brings screening to areas or populations with limited access to an ophthalmologist: a camera and a programme can identify who needs to be seen urgently. Research is even being conducted into how the retina can provide clues about cardiovascular risk.<\/p>\n

An important caveat: these tools do not replace the ophthalmologist, but rather support them. The final decision, the clinical context and patient care remain in human hands. AI provides the speed; medical judgement, the direction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
