Recognising the symptoms and acting quickly is key to preserving your eyesight.<\/p>\n<p>Who is most at risk?<\/p>\n<p>Although it can affect anyone, it is more common in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People with short-sightedness, particularly severe short-sightedness<\/li>\n<li>Patients with diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Those with a history of eye trauma<\/li>\n<li>People who have had cataract surgery (to a lesser extent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Warning signs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are characteristic symptoms that require immediate attention:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Floaters (myodesopsia): moving spots in your vision<\/li>\n<li>Flashes of light (photopsia): flashes even with the eyes closed<\/li>\n<li>Shadow or \u2018black curtain\u2019: loss of peripheral vision progressing towards the centre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you experience any of these signs, it is essential to see an ophthalmologist immediately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urgent and specialist treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Treatment for retinal detachment is surgical and, in many cases, must be performed within the first 24 hours. The speed of action has a direct impact on the visual prognosis.<\/p>\n<p>Current techniques, such as vitrectomy, have significantly improved safety and outcomes, allowing vision to be restored even in complex situations.
