{"id":2020,"date":"2017-10-23T10:41:08","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T10:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inof.es\/radiacion-solar-y-salud-ocular\/"},"modified":"2022-05-22T19:16:57","modified_gmt":"2022-05-22T19:16:57","slug":"solar-radiation-and-eye-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inof.es\/en\/solar-radiation-and-eye-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar radiation and eye health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n<div id=\"content-wrap\" class=\"container clr\">\n<div class=\"single-blog-content entry clr\">\n<div class=\"itemFullText\">\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"es\" data-phrase-index=\"0\" data-number-of-phrases=\"4\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">Solar radiation affects our eye health more than we can imagine.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"es\" data-phrase-index=\"2\" data-number-of-phrases=\"4\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">Solar rays are formed not only by the visible part that we perceive and that makes it possible for us to see what is in our environment, but also by a part that is invisible to our eyes.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"es\" data-phrase-index=\"3\" data-number-of-phrases=\"4\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">It is, on the one hand, <strong>infrared radiation<\/strong>, which does not cause eye damage, and, on the other, <strong>ultraviolet (UV) radiation<\/strong>, which can cause eye damage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"es\" data-phrase-index=\"0\" data-number-of-phrases=\"1\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">Types of solar radiation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are three types of UV radiation: UVA, UVB and UVC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UVC radiation<\/strong> is the most harmful, but it is completely blocked by the earth&#8217;s atmosphere and, in normal conditions, does not reach the surface of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UVB radiation<\/strong> reaches the earth&#8217;s surface but is almost completely absorbed by the cornea (the outermost part of the eye).<\/p>\n<p><strong>UVA radiation<\/strong> is blocked mainly by the crystalline lens (the eye&#8217;s transparent intraocular lens that helps us focus on images).<\/p>\n<h2>Ocular lesions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Prolonged exposure to sunlight, without proper protection, can cause eye damage from UV radiation.<\/strong> In the outermost parts of the eye, such as the eyelids, UV radiation is an important factor in certain types of cancer (<strong>squamous cell carcinoma<\/strong>). In terms of the <strong>cornea<\/strong>, it can cause acute <strong>photokeratitis<\/strong> (similar to a &#8220;superficial burn&#8221;), which can require emergency treatment due to the great pain and damage to vision it causes, although there are no subsequent consequences after recovery.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the connective tissue, UV radiation can lead to the appearance of <strong>pterygium<\/strong> (a reddish deposit in a triangular shape <em>in the white<\/em> of the eye that can invade the cornea) or <strong>pinguecula<\/strong> (a nodular yellow deposit that does not invade the cornea). These are both benign lesions that are a form of defence against the aggressive nature of solar radiation. In terms of the internal eye, UV radiation can contribute to <strong>cataracts<\/strong> forming (progressive opacification of the lens), and can cause <strong>acute retinal damage<\/strong> (radiation <strong>retinopathy<\/strong> from looking directly at the sun, for example during a solar eclipse, without adequate protection). It can also be a contributing factor to chronic damage that can progress to significant visual impairment, such as <strong>age-related macular degeneration (AMD)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Damage prevention<\/h2>\n<p>To prevent UV radiation damage, it is advisable <strong>to avoid exposure to the sun when it is at its highest intensity<\/strong> (from 10 am to 2 pm). <strong>Use hats<\/strong> with a wide brim and wear sunglasses that completely block out UV radiation. In order <strong>to acquire glasses that offer suitable protection<\/strong>, you should check that they meet the following requirements, as recommended by European regulations: CE marking, &#8220;<strong>100% UV<\/strong>&#8221; protection (total protection against UV radiation) and the correct category in terms of protection against visible solar rays:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>category 0: filters up to 20% of the rays<\/li>\n<li>category 1: between 20%-57%<\/li>\n<li>category 2: between 57%-80%<\/li>\n<li>category 3: between 80%-90%<\/li>\n<li>category 4: over 90%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Categories 2 and 3 provide sufficient protection for daily activities and driving, while category 4 is required for activities with high exposure to sunlight, such as in desert areas or mountains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is important to remember that eye protection should start from childhood, since this age involves more outdoor activities and, additionally, certain defence mechanisms have not yet fully developed, such as the crystalline lens filtering UV radiation, for example.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Solar radiation affects our eye health more than we can imagine.
