What is ocular aesthetics
Ocular aesthetics is a branch of ophthalmology dedicated to correcting and improving the expression of the look, deteriorated by the symptoms of the passage of time.
Frequently, the first signs of aging are evident on the face, around the eyes, and is manifested in form of:
- Wrinkles and expression lines
- Dark circles
- Excess skin in the eyelids
- Eye bags
Ocular aesthetics offers different solutions to correct the signs of ageing and adapt to your needs.

Ocular aesthetic treatments
There are many types of surgical and non-surgical procedures designed to treat and improve the appearance of their eyes.
Surgical procedures
Blepharoplasty: Due to the loss of elasticity of the skin, an accumulation of tissue is formed in the upper eyelid called dermatochalasis. However, in the lower eyelid it is the adipose tissue towards the outside of the orbit that appears giving rise to the eye bags.
For the treatment of both conditions it is used:
- Upper blepharoplasty: The accumulation of tissue in the upper eyelid is removed by microsurgery of skin excision through a hidden incision in the natural sulcus of the eyelid.
- Lower blepharoplasty: Microsurgery removes or repositions excess fat from the lower eyelids through a hidden incision, preserving the expression of the patient’s gaze. In many cases, a chemical peel is done in the same intervention.
Non-surgical procedures
Botulinum toxin injection: It is a natural protein that reduces the contraction of the facial muscles thus removing the presence of facial wrinkles, such as the frown, the crow’s feet and expression lines, among others. The treatment achieves that the facial skin looks smooth, with a lifting appearance.
Injectable fillers of hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid is a substance that moisturizes, attracts water, stimulates the production of collagen and fills. If this is injected into specific areas of the face; it allows you to recover the loss of volume caused by the passage of time. This softens facial features, increases cheekbones, softens the dark circles, give projection to the chin and reduces wrinkles and sulcus.
Chemical peeling: This is the application of a chemical solution in the lower eyelids and in the area that surrounds them, that removes dead cells of the skin allowing the regeneration of new, soft and healthy skin. It allows to recover the harmful effects of sun (such as sunspots) and the ageing process of the skin.

Oculofacial rejuvenation treatments
There are other revitalizing treatments to rejuvenate the skin of the entire face, which do not act as filler and are minimally invasive.
Collagen therapy
Collagen therapy is an oculofacial rejuvenation treatment that is performed using a microneedle technique, which stimulates the natural production of collagen of the skin through multiple micropunctions performed at the necessary depth according to the needs of each patient. The natural production of collagen begins to decrease around 25-30 years making this a good moment to start with these types of treatments. It is a preventive therapy recommended for people with young skin who want to keep it preserve it and improve its texture and luminosity, thus delaying the passage of time.

Frequent questions
These procedures can be performed in almost all cases. There are only a few ocular limitations, so the oculoplastic ophthalmologist surgeon will carry out a complete preliminary study to assess the possible risks and minimize them.
It is a surgery with few risks.
These procedures are not painful in the postoperative period. Only some bruises and inflammation will appear, of very limited duration that will affect the periocular area.
The results are visible between 7 to 15 days and it is usually a long-term solution.
Before starting treatment, the oculofacial aesthetic specialist applies an anaesthetic ointment to minimize possible discomfort. Then, the specialist inject small doses of botulinum toxin into the muscles of the face until the desired effect is achieved.
After treatment, it is recommended:
- Do not exercise during the first 24 hours.
- Do not expose yourself to UVA rays
- Do not apply facial massages.
The definitive results are usually seen 4 days after treatment. The effects are not permanent, but last between 5 and 6 months and then disappear progressively.
It has no side effects, when it is 100% hyaluronic and is a good product. It simply produces transient inflammation by the same injection. There are many effects and benefits.
Swelling and small purples are usually appearing, so it is treated with anti-inflammatory cream for a few days.
